Picture Book (1)

  • Title: I Love School
  • Author: Philemon Sturges
  • Illustrator: Shari Halpern
  • Grade Level: Kindergarten would be my suggested grade level for this book. The story and it's content are simple and easy for young children to identify with.
  • Summary: I Love School is a picture book aimed at young children. The plot is simple as it follows a class through their activities and adventures during a school day. This book is easily relatable for children and can help introduce them to school and the processes involved. It could also be used for shared reading or read alouds.
  • Classroom Skills and Strategies:
    • This book can be used to show kids how enjoyable school can be and that it is something to look forward to.
    • It can also be used to introduce activities including art and read aloud time.
  • ESOL Strategies:
    • The illustrations are clearly representative of the words. The books also shows kids role playing and working together. An ESOL strategy that could be used would be to have each student add a page with illustration and words to this story.
    • Another strategy that would be beneficial for ESOL students would be a word wall to focus on the vocabulary. The wall would be displayed in the classroom and referred back to. An image depicting the words could be on the cards in the word wallas well. The vocabulary is appropriate for beginning English learners and the new setting that the students are in.
  • Read Aloud: All
  • Personal Opinion: I personally liked the book and the illustrations. There are various cultures represented in the book and students could easily identify with the characters and activities presented. Overall it is a good, fun book.
