Concept Book (2)

How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten? is written and illustrated by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague.
  • Suggested Grade Level: Prekindergarten-Kindergarten. The concept of this book is counting to ten and I don't think that would be appropriate beyond Kindergarten.
  • Summary: This fun, informative book teaches about counting and different kinds of dinosaurs. It depicts dinosaurs in different situations at a child's (or dinosaurs) house with objects to be counted. For example, "four balls that bounce" and ""under the bed, six dirty socks." It is written in story format with sentences rather than just the numbers and titles. On each picture there is the name of the dinosaur written somewhere beside it's tail or body.
  • Classroom Skills & Strategies:
    • This book will teach counting in a fun and funny way.
    • It could also be used to introduce the names and characteristics of dinosaurs.
  • ESOL Strategies:
    • Illustrations
    • Rhyming (The story is rhyming and can be chanted in a songlike manner to get the students actively engaged)
  • Read Aloud: All
  • Personal Opinion: This book is entertaining and captivating because of it's main character-dinosaurs. Any child interested in dinosaurs and fun will be attracted to this book. The objects used for counting are probably things the kids would have in their own house which makes it relatable. It presents counting and dinosaur types in a light spirited and comical tone.
